Musings from a golf society captain

One ask, one challenge

Serving as society captain in Chicago these past two seasons has been my privilege and honor.

Congratulations are due not only to each of the champions recently toasted at the Winter Formal, but to each of you who participated and
competed in a NewClub event this year. 2024 is shaping up to be an even better year, with incredible fixtures, season-long competitions including the Quest for the Crown and Order of Merit, captains matches, monthly medals, and even more opportunities to enjoy a walk with friends of the society.

Before signing off, I have one ask and one challenge for our membership. Enough thanks cannot be given Chicago’s vice-captains for their unwavering support for the society: Laruen Moy, Tony Caponigro, Bill Colbert, Stephen Parkerson, Chris Wang, and your new chapter captain, Brian Ekstrom. Each of these individuals brought unique contributions for the betterment of our collective experience with NewClub. I appreciate each of you – thank you.

Drawing upon Atlanta captain Scott Ford’s eloquent words of wisdom: get involved, participate. As we hunker down at the end of a season, I ask you to think about how you want to be involved with NewClub in 2024, how you will participate, and show up. There is much to be gained from being an active part of this society. We are fortunate as a society to bring a collective voice to influence the direction of this game we love. This influence will continue to grow and deepen as NewClub continues to thrive. Supporting organizations and causes can be as important as the commercial selection of golf ball or club, and Canal Shores, with its ongoing renovation focused on providing youth with access to the game, is one I choose to support.

My challenge to the society is to collectively match an individual contribution of $2500 to generate a collective $5000 donation to Canal Shores on behalf of NewClub Golf Society membership. (simplified instructions at bottom, including the ability for individuals to make direct contributions inclusive of any applicable tax deductibility). If so inclined and able to do so, your support of Canal Shores will be greatly appreciated.

Wishing you all health, prosperity, and a multitude of birdies this holiday season and in 2024.

Your captain,

Thomas McCartney
